In the realm of power supplies, most would agree that PC Power & Cooling (acquired by OCZ in 2007) stands at the top of the heap. Everyone, that is, except for Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, and a handful of others who have managed to significantly close the performance gap in recent years. Nevertheless, PCP&P is one of the few companies we can say has stayed on top of their respective field, and it has done so by bucking trends and instead adhering to a strict design philosophy, even when it wasn't fashionable to do so. For example, to this day PCP&P refuses to release a modular power supply, holding firm that modular plugs add too much electrical resistance and may corrode or loosen over time (such worry warts!). The company also stayed consistent in utilizing a single, large +12V rail design rather than spread the amps over multiple +12V rails and lose potential power in the process.
But hey, we're not here today to hold PCP&P's PSU jockstrap. Instead, the company has just released an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), the Pro-Source 1500 UPS, somewhat sidestepping out of its element into an area traditionally dominated by APC, CyberPower Systems, and Tripp Lite. Also known as a backup power supply, UPSs are one of the oft-most overlooked components, yet arguably one of the most important investments of any PC build, not only to provide a power source in case your electricity goes out, but to ensure a clean flow of power to your pricey parts. Will the transition from PSU to UPS maker be a smooth one for PCP&P? Will we run out of abbreviations?
