Laptops are becoming more common among individuals and basic computer workstations seem to be taking over much of the corporate world. Many businesses are buying simple workstations to save money during these sad economic times. Unfortunately that means these systems are often built with just the basic necessity of reading CDs and DVDs, while leaving employees void of the ability to save data on discs. Similarly it comes down to money concerns on the individual front. Consumers are purchasing slimmed-down notebooks. And, even more drastically, we are seeing netbooks taking over a large chunk of the mobile market, most of which ship sans optical drive. The point here is that less individual computers have the built-in option for CD and DVD burning, while the need for this still exists, as much as ever.
The Plextor brand has found it's way in to many computer systems since they developed their first CD-ROM drive in 1989. Plextor has recognized the need for an easily mobile external DVD burner and introduced their new USB powered drive, the PX-610U. We were sent this DVD Super Multi Drive to review and we are anxious to see how it stands up to other DVD burners, both internal and external. So, before we get to all the technical results and overall look, let's take a look at the technical specs.

Taking the PX-610U out of the box we found a soft carrying bag, a cleaning cloth, user manual and, of course, a USB data/power cord. A nice addition in this bundle is the Roxio Creator 10CE CD/DVD burning software. This software should be more than sufficient for those that don't already have some burning software installed. But we'll take a closer look at that a bit later; First let's take a closer look at the drive itself.
