Cooler Master Storm Scout
Here at HL, we have recently drooled over some Cooler Master enclosures, the most recent being the HAF "Mini" 922 that was released in the U.S. a couple weeks ago. Now we are taking a close look at another Cooler Master mid-tower, the Scout. This box comes in from their line of Storm cases, of which the Sniper was recently evaluated in our lab. The Scout has some definite differences that will separate it from the other recently examined Cooler Master cases and we will be sure to point them out in detail. Every glamorous and/or gruesome defining detail is soon to follow. Stick with us, if you dare!

Page 3: Interior

With left side off you get a clear look at the rear LED fan and inside of the acrylic side window. The right side panel comes off just as easy since both come with thumbscrews installed. Cooler Master made the Scout very install-friendly with many tool-less options. Most of the cables are already tied together behind the right side panel, making the cable management job even easier for those that lack the skill and/or patience.

Theunderbelly of the case comes with no bling. The Scout has four plasticknobbed feet. There is one intake area for the PSU but noother options for intake fans on the bottom. This view doesinclude the welcomed sight of the 140mm top exhaust fan that will whiskthe hot air out the top blowhole.

Taking a closer look at the all-black interior we see typical expansion brackets, except that Cooler Master tossed in some thumb screws to be used with the clips, instead of regular screws. Below those slots, the PSU will rest on bottom of the case. There is a filter to help control some possible intake dust.  But we see a potential problem with the PSU resting directly on the filter at the bottom of the enclosure. We maintain that it would probably be wiser for the PSU to have a gap between it and the bottom of the box, like most cases with the same PSU location. We think a design where the PSU rests slightly above the bottom would be a better option. The main reason is some users will rest this case on some carpet and potentially end up with a complete blockage of the PSU air intake. Now that we've said our piece on that, let's move on to the other intake area on the Scout.

Moving from the rear interior to the front interior we see the other red LED fan in the lower front. This fan will blow air right over our installed hard drives then through the rest of the case. We also noticed a different look to the optical drive tool-less installation setup. We found that Cooler Master's old push button optical drive installation method left our optical drives with a little play. Later when we install our optical drive we will find out if this new tool-less mechanism is an improvement. So, let's move on to the installation and find out.
