Zalman is unquestionably one of the leaders in PC air cooling technology. The CNPS-9700 and 9500 dominated the CPU air cooling world upon release. With the CNPS-9900, can Zalman maintain air cooling supremacy?
To develop the CNPS-9900, Zalman made some significant changes to their popular 9700 and 9500 coolers. Its still an all copper unit featuring heatpipes, copper fins and a 120mm fan. Similarities to the older siblings end there, however. It uses an interesting design, with two coils of copper fins on the front and back. The coils sandwich a 120mm LED fan. One heatpipe serves the front coil while a pair are behind the fan. Zalman calls this a dual heatpipe design, and the divided workload should give this cooler excellent cooling ability.

As you can see in the chart above, the 9900 is fairly light as coolers go these days. Even so, gone are the days when only a few coolers required a backplate. Interestingly with the 9900, only those of us with Intel's LGA775 socket will require the use of a backplate.
