Removing the LITE-ON SHW-160P6SU EZ-DUB from its packaging, you are greeted with the unit, a 110V power adapter and plug, a USB interface adapter (for connectivity with your PC), a User's Manual, and an impressive software bundle.
The software bundle included with the LITE-ON SHW-160P6SU EZ-DUB includes Nero 6.6 OEM Suite (NeroExpress 6.6, INCD 4, NeroVision Express 3, Nero BackItUp, and other assorted goodies), an OEM version of CyberLink's PowerDVD 6, and LITE-ON's proprietary EZ-DUB software, which makes backing up files and copying CD/DVDs as easy as pushing a button and following a few quite simple on screen instruction.
From an operational standpoint, the LITE-ON SHW-160P6SU EZ-DUB is no more than a standard dual layer x16 DVD/DRD/RW burner sealed in a plastic enclosure. Is that a bad thing? Hell no, I've long been a fan of LITE-ON DVD/CD burners both for their pricepoint and their excellent performance.
What seperates the EZ-DUB from ordinary internal DVD Burners? Besides the features listed above, the EZ-DUB is the single easiest installation you could ever imagine, requiring two cables to be attached...thats it. Also, as far as performance, coupled with the included software, users should have absolutely no problem backing up important files or copying entire disks....something that can be a hassle with ordinary drives.
The LITE-ON SHW-160P6SU EZ-DUB is no pocket sized unit....weighing in at just under 4 pounds and measuring 9.5' (L) x 6.5' (W) x 2.5 (H). However its size does have its advantages. The unit will not easily be knocked from its perch, something that often damages or destroys external storage units. Encased is a hard plastic shell, the EZ-DUB should easily survive and short falls or moderate trauma.
Setting up the LITE-ON EZDUB is as simple as it gets, with only two connections to worry about. The rear of the LITE-ON EZ-DUB features a USB connector and a power connector (for the 110V power adapter), connect one end of the USB cable to the EZ-DUB, the other to your PC, then plug in the power adapter, and you're all set.
You want simple operation? Backing up files or entire disks comes down to pushing a single button (either DUB or FILE), and following a few cvery sinple on screen instructions.
The LITE-ON SHW-160P6SU EZ-DUB features a pair of large buttons on the top of the unit. The first is the "FILE" button. Users wanting to pack up files from their PC (anything from images to financial records) can simply push the "FILE" button, which opens the EZ-DUB software, where you can simply drag and drop the files to be saved.
The second button, labeled "DUB", allows you to copy complete DVDs or CDs with the push of a button. Those of you with internal DVD burners or players can simply put the source disk in that player and the LITE-ON EZ-DUB will automatically recognize the unit and begin the burn process.
Those of you with no second player can still use the DUB feature by way of a cached copy of the disk on your HDD.First you'll insert the source disk into the EZ-DUB, which will copy the disk to a cache file. Once the copy is complete, the EZ-DUB software will prompt you for a blank disk, once installed, the EZ-DUB will copy the content from the cache file to the DVD/CD.
During testing, I tried several different scenarios, from media files to bootable disks (ISOs), and each was copied simply and flawlessly. Those of you (like me) who always have issues backing up files or copying disks will love the functionality.....and considering the prices of CDs and DVD, the EZ-DUB is a seriously attractive alternative to pricey external HDD or high capacity USB keys.
Warranty & Support
LITE-ON's customer service page includes links to a FAQ section, a Driver/Firmware section, as well as a message box where you can contact them directly if your issue is not resolved using the above methods. Using the provided information I submitted an email question via their website and recieved in answer in under 24 hours.
At first I questioned the need for an external CD/DVD burner such as the EZ-DUB. Then I stopped to realize that with enclosures getting smaller and internal water cooling kits, card readers, and other peripherrals taking up precious space, an external CD/DVD burner makes more sense than I realized. Then I was completely won over by the easy installation and operation of the EZ-DUB. For the inexperienced user, CD/DVD burning and file backup is a real hassle, however the EZ-DUB makes all of this as easy as pushing a single button (either FILE or DUB). The burner is no noisier than any standard drive and burned several file and disk types without issue. The included software is simply icing on the cake. The proprietary EZ-DUB software is trouble free, easy to install, and a pleasure to use......and with a great bundle including Nero's OEM Suite and CyberLink's Power DVD, you have everything you could possibly need.
I honestly could not find a single fault with the LITE-ON SHW-160P6SU EZ-DUB, The unti itself comes in an extremely durable enclosure, it was easy to set up and operate, and best of all, at under $100 its a bargain when you consider its a backup/ storage solution that can be used over and over. The LITE-ON SHW-160P6SU EZ-DUB is one of the coolest products I've come across in quite some time.
