We are fast approaching a time when physical medium is really on its way out. This isn't to say that media transport will only be over a link, but the day of pressed, read only, media is on the edge of being obsolete. Optical media is still an important part of computing for now and it helps to have a drive that is portable and ready to go when you need it. Lite-On produces such drives and the eNAU108 is one of the latest 8x USB DVDRW drives to hit the market. USB comes in handy when you don't have a working optical drive.

About Lite-On

Lite-On IT started of as a business unit within Lite-On Technology Corporation in 1995. By that time the market for Optical Disc Drives (ODD) was growing very fast, and to be able to play a significant role in this, Lite-On Technology decided to establish a dedicated business unit to produce high quality CD-ROM drives. A large manufacturing facility was established in China to meet all demands and Lite-On soon became Taiwan's biggest CD-ROM drive manufacturer, and number three worldwide.

Due to the growing success in the ODD market, Lite-On IT transformed from a relatively small business unit to an independent subsidiary of Lite-On Group, producing over 1 million drives per month. In 1999, the foundation of Lite-On IT Corporation as the youngest member of the Lite-On Group was a fact. Besides headquarters in Taipei, branch offices were established in the United States (California) and Europe (The Netherlands).

In the years to follow, Lite-On IT continued its growth in the ODD business, by setting extensive distribution networks in the United States and Europe. With the introduction of more ODD products, like CD-RW, DVD-ROM, COMBO and DVD-RW drives, Lite-On IT increased it's production from 1 million drives per month in 1999, to no less then 5 million drives per month in 2005. With this unique achievement Lite-On IT became the world's second biggest ODD manufacturer.

Lite-On uses a red box with white and blue accents for the retail packaging. The front of the box clearly shows that this is an 8x external USB optical drive.

The back of the packaging is blue and gives some more information about the eNAU108.

Package Contents

Lite-On packages a USB2 Y-cable along with some literature and Nero 9 Essentials for Windows and the eNAU108, itself.

The Y-cable is used to provide more power if the eNAU108 doesn't work with a single port. You can try it out by plugging the cord in using the mini-USB2 connect to the eNAU108 and plugging the thicker cable into the computer. It should work with a single cable as ours did on all computers we've tried.

A size comparison is not really needed for this slim drive. The eNAU108 has a sleek black finish and is no bigger than a CD case and just a bit thicker. It is a laptop sized drive stuffed into a very tiny external enclosure. It is very light.

The laptop type of drive is very apparent. The front stamps indicate that it is a DVD Multi Recorder and can write DVDRW DL and more. There is an eject button to the right of the transfer indicator LED.

The back of the eNAU108 is blank except for the single mini-USB2 port. The Y-cable plugs into this port. Since this drive is low power, there is no need to carry an AC adapter to power this device. The eNAU108 is totally powered over the USB connection. The Y-cable may be needed for systems that don't provide enough power over a single USB port.

The Lite-On logo is emblazoned in white across the shiny, piano black, exterior.

The bottom of the eNAU108 has the various certifications and serial numbers present on drives. The manufactured date is pretty recent; October 2010.

One thing to note is that this drive isn't targeted to the ultra high performance market. It is a value segment slim drive and as such was tested in a way that would mimic its targeted use. To do this, it was used to burn data CDs and DVDs along with some other tasks such as installing operating systems and software. The drive won't win any speed contests, but it burned our media as fast as the media could handle. Even on bad media, the drive performed well, the data was fine on the disk.

On a personal note, this drive performed well in a specific situation when one of my drives was causing all kinds of problems. The eNAU108 gave the computer the ability to install an operating system. »This thread gives the details. Having a USB optical drive is very handy when problems occur.

The Lite-On eNAU108 retails for about $30-$40 (Amazon Link) which is a good price for a slim, external drive. Many internal optical drives are this price and given the portability of the eNAU108, it really helps to have an external drive in case of internal drive problems. Most systems from even years ago can boot off of USB drives. The eNAU108 is an excellent addition to any laptop without a DVDRW drive or the PC repairman's toolkit. The added benefit of not having to carry an AC adapter is a large plus for road warriors. Lite-On has an excellent product on their hands.

ASE Labs would like to thank Lite-On for making this review possible.
